Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a Construction Inspector to oversee inspection duties, ensure compliance with contract requirements, and coordinate across contractors and the Department to maintain project progress.

This role requires collaborating with project managers, collecting data on diaries and reports, and ensuring material sampling/testing per specifications. Travel and extended hours may be required, including responses to inclement weather.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Physical demands include sitting or standing for extended periods and possible travel; outdoor work in all weather.
• Motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs inspection duties and ensures contractors follow contract requirements and standard specifications.
• Assists project managers in routine daily decisions concerning construction practices on assigned projects.
• Coordinates work between contractors and the Department to ensure progress of work.
• Ensures data is collected and compiled on daily diaries and construction reports per Department policy.
• Responsible for final construction plans on assigned projects.
• Ensures proper sampling and testing of materials per Department specifications.
• Coordinates with utility companies for relocation of utilities on assigned projects.
• Assists with office and managerial procedures, correspondence with contractors and Department personnel.
• Assists with emergencies and inclement weather operations; may work extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
