Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation in Spokane is seeking a Transportation Engineer 1 to support design, inspection, and construction activities. You’ll review plans, assist with materials testing, and help ensure safety and quality on projects.

Qualifications

  • Technical Engineering Knowledge: BSCE/BSSE or EIT and ability to apply civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation, or surveying principles.
  • Construction Inspection and Materials Support: interpret plans, observe contractor work, assist with materials sampling/testing, and document inspections.
  • Contract Documentation and Records Support: maintain accurate construction docs, quantity calculations, field notes, and as-built records.
  • Entry-Level Design and Drafting Support: assist with basic design elements, calculations, and plan sheets.
  • Survey Support Skills: assist field survey activities and data collection for projects.
  • Analytical and Quantitative Skills: perform basic engineering calculations, verify quantities, track progress.
  • Communication and Team Collaboration: communicate effectively with inspectors, engineers, staff, contractors, public.
  • Engineering Technology and Software Application: use/d learn drafting, documentation, and office software.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret highway plans and specifications, monitor contractor work, and ensure compliance.
  • Support transportation design by preparing, revising, and reviewing plan sheets and calculations.
  • Assist with materials sampling, testing, and inspection documentation.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation including daily reports and field notes.
  • Participate in survey data collection and field activities as needed.
  • Collaborate with inspectors, engineers, project staff, and the public to share observations.
