Job description

Job Description

Join our Atlanta office as a growing technical contributor on the Transit and Urban Mobility Team! This role delivers civil engineering solutions of moderate to significant complexity for transit infrastructure, complete streets, and active transportation projects across the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. The engineer is expected to work with increasing independence and take on greater technical ownership of project tasks and deliverables.

You will contribute to projects for clients such as MARTA, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), Georgia DOT (GDOT), and the City of Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT). Project types include heavy and light rail infrastructure, bus rapid transit, ADA accessibility programs, roadway reconstruction, multimodal corridor design, and capital project delivery incorporating complete streets and active transportation infrastructure.

Essential Job Functions
  • Lead technical tasks and support senior engineers on complex transit infrastructure, multimodal corridor, and active transportation projects in the Atlanta metropolitan region.
  • Develop civil engineering designs for transit projects including MARTA rail and bus infrastructure, BRT corridors, transit stations, and passenger amenities.
  • Prepare complete streets and multimodal corridor designs integrating pedestrian, bicycle, and transit accommodations in compliance with ADA and applicable federal, state, and local standards.
  • Prepare construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents for roadway, transit, and active transportation projects; perform and support technical reviews of work prepared by junior staff.
  • Review draft designs for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and ensure firm policies and practices are followed on all designs.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to resolve design challenges of moderate complexity on multimodal and transit projects, escalating more complex issues to senior staff as appropriate.
  • Conduct site investigations, field reviews, and studies to ensure designs are aligned with location specifications; update design requirements as necessary.
  • Inspect new construction and existing transportation structures as necessary.
  • Support coordination with MARTA, GDOT, ATLDOT, and ARC project managers, stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and community partners throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including traffic, structural, landscape architecture, and environmental disciplines.
  • Contribute to the firm's technical knowledge management (TKM) by developing white papers and technical design documentation for new or special‑case designs, studies, and innovative solutions.
  • Submit technical papers and designs for publication in professional and technical journals; attend conferences, symposia, and industry events to advance the visibility of the firm's products and services.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior engineering staff; review the work of more junior staff.
  • Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and public and stakeholder engagement materials.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering or related discipline. Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in states where an EIT is not obtainable (within 18 months of hire or promotion or transfer). 5 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Georgia, or active pursuit of licensure with demonstrated progress toward examination.
  • Six (6) or more years of directly related professional experience in civil or transportation engineering, with experience on transit or multimodal infrastructure projects in the Atlanta metropolitan region.
  • Direct project experience with MARTA, GDOT, ATLDOT, ARC, or related Atlanta‑area transit and transportation agencies.
  • Knowledge of federal transit and transportation funding programs (FTA, FHWA) and associated compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with NEPA processes, environmental permitting, and right‑of‑way acquisition procedures in the Georgia regulatory context.
  • Experience with value engineering, constructability reviews, or alternative project delivery methods.
  • Background in stormwater management, green infrastructure, or sustainable design practices in urban corridor applications, including Georgia EPD and City of Atlanta stormwater requirements.
  • Proficiency in GIS tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS for spatial analysis and project mapping.
  • Experience presenting to client teams, agency stakeholders, or community audiences.
  • PTOE or related specialty certification.
Skills & Abilities
Technical Proficiency
  • Proficiency in civil engineering design software, including AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and/or OpenRoads Designer.
  • Solid working knowledge of AASHTO, PROWAG, MUTCD, and Georgia DOT standard specifications and design guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop roadway, drainage, grading, and utility design for urban transit and multimodal infrastructure of moderate to significant complexity.
  • Working knowledge of complete streets design principles, Vision Zero concepts, and active transportation planning and design frameworks.
  • Familiarity with ADA requirements and universal design standards as applied to public right‑of‑way and transit infrastructure.
  • Growing familiarity with Atlanta‑specific design standards, permitting processes, and the regulatory environment governing MARTA, GDOT, and ATLDOT projects.
