Actalent is seeking a Transportation Engineer in Downers Grove, IL to perform plan development for transportation design projects using MicroStation/OpenRoads. You will coordinate with regulatory agencies and subconsultants, oversee projects from start to finish, and mentor junior engineers.

This hybrid role involves producing designs and managing client relationships. Ideal candidates have a PE license or near, 5+ years in transportation/roadway engineering (IDOT/Tollway), strong communication

Transportation Engineer

Perform plan development activities for a comprehensive range of transportation design projects, such as horizontal and vertical geometry, cross sections, earthwork modeling, 3D roadway modeling, quantities calculations, construction specifications, and utility coordination. Utilize MicroStation/OpenRoads for geometric design and modeling on IDOT and Tollway projects. Evaluate the need for design changes and make appropriate recommendations. Coordinate with regulatory agencies, utility companies, and subconsultants to obtain information, guidance, and requirements. Oversee projects from start to finish and mentor and develop junior engineers on the team.

Responsibilities

• Develop plans for transportation design projects including geometric design and modeling.
• Utilize MicroStation/OpenRoads for design work on IDOT and Tollway projects.
• Assess and recommend changes to designs as necessary.
• Coordinate with regulatory agencies, utility companies, and subconsultants.
• Oversee projects from inception to completion.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers.

Essential Skills

• Experience with MicroStation and Bentley OpenRoads.
• Professional Engineer license (or close to obtaining).
• At least five years of transportation/roadway engineering experience related to IDOT or Tollway.
• Proficient in transportation and roadway design.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work with clients and manage projects independently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
• Willingness to train and develop junior staff.

Work Environment

This position is open due to a strong backlog and continued success in winning projects. The company operates on a hybrid schedule, with 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home. The team consists of approximately 15 employees, including survey crews, a Survey Manager, Professional Engineers, junior engineers, and inspectors. The role includes opportunities for professional development, team growth, and direct client interaction. Projects vary in size and are from various IDOT districts, typically ranging from $2-3 million each. The individual in this role will spend 80% of their time in production and 20% on management, proposals, and professional development.

This is a Permanent position based out of Downers Grove, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $115000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, PTO, holidays, and 401(k) benefits available to eligible employees working 30+ hours/week.

• Medical plans through BCBS Illinois with employee costs ranging from $27.45 to $139.91 per paycheck depending on coverage level.
• Dental coverage through Guardian starts at $7.48/paycheck and includes orthodontia benefits.
• Vision coverage is 100% company-paid and includes annual exams, frames, or contacts.
• Company provides basic life insurance, short- and long-term disability, and a 401(k) with at least a 3% safe harbor contribution.
• Employees receive 3 weeks PTO to start (increasing with tenure) plus 8 paid holidays.
