Job summary

MacKay is seeking an Engineering Manager in Chicago to lead and mentor our engineering staff on transportation projects. You will guide design decisions, ensure QA/QC standards, and drive project deliverables from concept through QA/QC to final release.

The role emphasizes teaching, coaching, and solving problems collaboratively, while advancing office design standards and best practices in a hybrid Chicago setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
• Registered PE in Illinois or ability to obtain reciprocity.
• 10+ years of transportation engineering experience (roadway, stormwater, grading).
• Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and design technicians.
• Strong QA/QC background with attention to detail and rigor.
• Proficiency in Bentley OpenRoads Designer and AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred.
• Enthusiasm for teaching, coaching, and collaborative problem solving.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a go-to technical resource for engineering staff with day-to-day mentorship.
• Coach and develop project engineers and design technicians for independent work.
• Lead QA/QC reviews of project deliverables to ensure accuracy and standards.
• Troubleshoot complex engineering problems and resolve bottlenecks in real time.
• Review roadway, stormwater, and grading design for buildable, high‑quality solutions.
• Partner with project managers to align work with scope, schedule, and budget.
• Help set and reinforce office-wide design standards and best practices.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing within the team.
