Resident Transportation Driver Job Summary
The Resident Transportation Driver coordinates and provides safe, timely transportation for residents traveling to and from physician appointments, medical appointments, hospitals, outpatient programs, specialty clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
This position works closely with the nursing and clinical teams to ensure residents are transported safely, comfortably, and on schedule.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and schedule resident transportation based on appointment times and resident needs.
- Safely transport residents to and from doctor appointments, hospitals, medical offices, outpatient programs, specialty clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
- Develop daily driving schedules based on resident appointments and transportation needs.
- Provide transportation for new or current residents returning from the hospital following discharge.
- Assist residents with safe entry, exit, loading, unloading, and transportation.
- Assist clinical staff with lifting, transferring, repositioning, and safely transporting residents as directed.
- Provide appropriate assistance to residents who require moderate to total assistance with mobility and transfers.
- Closely observe residents during transportation and report changes in condition to the nurse or clinical supervisor.
- Report changes or abnormal findings, including changes in consciousness, pain, bleeding, vital signs, behavior, or overall condition.
- Provide a timely report to nursing staff following resident transportation.
- Transport medical records and other required documents to physicians' offices and medical facilities.
- Communicate professionally with hospitals, physician offices, specialty clinics, healthcare providers, residents, families, and responsible parties.
- Promptly communicate appointment or transportation schedule changes to the Director of Nursing (DON), nursing staff, ancillary service providers, and responsible parties.
- Follow up as needed to ensure appointments and transportation services remain properly scheduled.
- Provide residents with adequate hydration during transportation and throughout the day according to individual resident needs.
- Protect resident privacy and personal property at all times.
- Follow all facility, transportation, infection control, and resident safety policies and procedures.
Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
- Maintain the facility transportation vehicle in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition.
- Complete routine vehicle inspections and report maintenance concerns promptly.
- Ensure routine vehicle maintenance is completed as required.
- Maintain accurate mileage and vehicle maintenance logs.
- Follow all applicable traffic laws and facility transportation policies.
- Prioritize resident safety at all times while operating the facility vehicle.
- Ensure residents are properly secured and transported according to facility procedures.
Qualifications
- Valid driver's license required.
- Clean driving record preferred.
- Previous experience providing medical transportation, resident transportation, patient transportation, senior transportation, or healthcare transportation is a plus.
- CNA certification is preferred but not required.
- Successful completion of a state-approved Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program preferred but not required.
- Current BLS/CPR certification preferred.
- Previous experience in a skilled nursing facility (SNF), nursing home, long-term care, assisted living, hospital, rehabilitation center, or healthcare setting is a plus.
- Comfortable assisting residents with mobility, transfers, and transportation.
- Dependable, punctual, professional, and compassionate.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively with residents, families, nurses, physicians, and healthcare providers.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements associated with assisting and transporting residents.
CNA Certification Is Preferred But NOT Required.
