Job summary

School City of East Chicago is seeking a Dispatcher (Transportation) to direct and coordinate bus drivers for safe, on-time transportation of district students and events. You will assist in developing and maintaining bus routes and respond to emergencies and schedule changes.

The ideal candidate holds a High School Diploma or GED and has experience in general transportation operations; you will communicate with drivers, parents and school staff to resolve issues and maintain route records.

Qualifications

• Experience in general transportation operations required.

Responsibilities

• Develops and monitors routes to improve efficiency.
• Schedule and dispatch buses and district vehicles to appropriate routes.
• Dispatch and coordinate bus and driver assignments for school-sponsored trips.
• Secure substitute drivers due to absences and review routes with substitutes as necessary.
• Communicate with drivers via the transportation communication system regarding routes, emergencies and student problems.
• Develop and maintain records for driver assignments and vehicle scheduling and use.
• Receive and respond to phone calls from parents or the public concerning transportation by providing information or referring calls to appropriate staff members.
• Assist in the development of bus routes and schedules and update routes and schedules throughout the school year.
• Assist in developing routes in routing program/software.
• Work with principals, parents, and bus drivers regarding scheduling, route problems, complaints and student code of conduct as it relates to student behavior on buses.
• Maintain constant communication with bus drivers via two-way radio.
• Assign bus drivers and substitutes in absence of supervisor.
• Assist in routine office operations.
• Promote safety practices for all transportation employees.
• Maintain accurate route records.
• Maintain records as required.
• Must possess written communication skills, including the ability to draft, edit, and proofread emails, as well as reading comprehension to respond to those emails.
• Any and all other duties as assigned.

Job Goal

Director and Operations Manager in the area of dispatching bus drivers to ensure safe, timely transportation of district students to school and related school events. Assist in the development and maintenance of bus routes. Assist with emergencies and adjustments due to accidents, weather, breakdowns or school schedules. Assist parents, drivers and school administrators in the resolution of problem situations.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

Working Conditions and Physical Environment

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.
