The Design Engineer will support Minnesota roadway and transportation projects through hands‑on design, plan preparation, quantity calculations, redline updates, and technical project support. This role will work heavily in OpenRoads Designer to develop roadway design elements, prepare plan sets, incorporate comments, and support project deliverables in alignment with MnDOT standards and expectations. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to high‑quality, community‑focused transportation solutions while building deep technical design expertise.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform hands‑on roadway design work for Minnesota transportation projects using OpenRoads Designer and related design tools.
  • Prepare and update roadway plans, profiles, typical sections, cross sections, details, exhibits, and other project deliverables.
  • Support plan preparation activities, including sheet setup, design revisions, redline incorporation, and comment resolution.
  • Develop and revise roadway design components such as alignments, profiles, corridors, surfaces, grading, drainage‑related elements, and plan details.
  • Assist with quantity calculations, construction cost estimating, and supporting documentation using Microsoft Excel and related tools.
  • Apply MnDOT standards, plan development expectations, and roadway design guidance to project work.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Roadway Design Team Leaders, technicians, and other technical staff to support project schedules and deliverables.

  • Support limited traffic‑related design tasks as needed, while primarily focusing on roadway engineering and design.
  • Use Bluebeam, Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, and related tools to support plan review, documentation, and project delivery.
  • Continue developing technical design judgment, roadway design knowledge, and understanding of MnDOT project workflows.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

  • 0-4 years of experience in roadway design, transportation engineering, or related civil engineering work.
  • Engineer‑in‑Training certification, or ability and willingness to pursue EIT/PE licensure path.
  • Experience or strong familiarity with roadway design, plan preparation, quantities, and construction documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel skills for quantities and project documentation.
  • Ability to incorporate redlines, resolve plan comments, and support accurate project deliverables.
  • Strong attention to detail, communication, organization, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, design leaders, engineers, and technicians.
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Familiarity with MnDOT standards, project delivery expectations, or roadway design processes.
  • Working knowledge of OpenRoads Designer or strong ability to develop proficiency in ORD roadway design workflows.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and related transportation design tools.
  • Exposure to traffic‑related design tasks, such as signing, striping, signals, lighting, or traffic plan support.
  • Experience preparing plan sets, quantities, cost estimates, technical documentation, or project exhibits.
  • Familiarity with roadway corridor modeling, alignments, profiles, cross sections, and grading workflows.
  • Previous internship, co‑op, consulting, construction, or transportation‑related project experience.
  • Interest in continuing to grow into a stronger technical roadway design role over time.
