Overview
Experience Qualification: Construction work experience and basic understanding of construction means and methods for transportation projects, with a focus on VDOT or other DOT experience. Experience inspecting projects such as roadway widening, intersection improvements, signalization, bridges, roadway maintenance, streetscape, utilities, and similar activities. Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and pass criminal background check, DMV record check, reference verification, and work history check.
Responsibilities
Main Duties:
- Provides on-site compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to plans, contracts, specifications, and codes. Communicates discrepancies and necessary actions to contractors.
- Maintains project records, including daily diaries documenting work performed. Uses basic algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and sketches.
- Checks materials and documents to verify testing; sends samples for verification when required.
- Assists with review of payment applications, final inspections, and punchlist creation.
- Communicates effectively and professionally with clients, contractors, the public, property owners, and team members.
- Ensures highway work zones and traffic control meet current standards.
- Performs work of basic to moderate difficulty, including materials testing and basic surveying.
- Completes administrative duties such as timesheets, expense reports, and mileage reports.
- Works outdoors in various weather conditions, navigates uneven terrain, climbs ladders, and works at heights.
Qualifications
Education/Knowledge:
- High school diploma or GED.
- OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification (must obtain within 3 months of hire).
- Basic mathematics skills, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Construction-related training or experience in road/bridge construction, civil engineering, materials, or related courses.
- Preferred certifications include VDOT certifications such as Intermediate Work Zone Protection, Asphalt Field Level I and II, and others listed.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Email, Internet, and web-based tools.
