The Transportation Construction Inspector position with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation offers a chance to help build safe and reliable roads across our communities. This role focuses on inspecting highway construction work to ensure it meets all plans, standards, and regulations. You will help document progress, complete testing, and support project staff in the field. As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform the following duties:
- Construction Inspection: Review materials, workmanship, and all phases of transportation construction for compliance
- Testing Support: Perform compaction checks and observe placement of concrete, asphalt, and drainage materials
- Project Documentation: Record diary entries, prepare estimates, review sketches, and track quantities for project records
- Field Coordination: Work with contractors, survey teams, and agency staff to resolve problems and maintain progress
- Regulation Compliance: Ensure construction activities follow all applicable standards, procedures, and environmental practices
- Winter Duties: Carry out tasks assigned by the Supervisor during winter operations
Work Schedule and Additional Information
- Full-time employment
- Note: This position will cover work projects in Pike and Wayne Counties.
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Overtime may be required based on work assignments.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements
- One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
- Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
- One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements
- This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
