Job summary

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Construction Inspector to support both office and field duties ensuring standards and procedures are met for safe travel. The role covers permit administration, construction oversight, customer service, and team coordination across the Highway Occupancy Program.

The position offers full-time hours (7:00 AM–3:00 PM, Mon–Fri) with a potential telework option inside Pennsylvania.

Qualifications

• Three years of highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, including reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• One year as an Engineering Technician (commonwealth title); or
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (commonwealth titles); or
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Take part in important transportation work as a Transportation Construction Inspector with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. This position supports the Highway Occupancy Program by reviewing construction activities, guiding permit processes, and helping maintain safe transportation conditions. As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform the following duties:

• Permit Administration: Review permit requests and coordinate program activities to meet Department goals

Work Schedule and Additional Information

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Hollidaysburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements

• Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
• Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
• One year as an Engineering Technician (commonwealth title); or
• Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (commonwealth titles); or
• One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement

• This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License or equivalent.

  • Transportation Technician
• Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
• The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
• Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher.
• Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower class by the posting closing date with no break in service.
