Job summary

Fort Wayne Community Schools is seeking a Transportation Assistant to support student safety on assigned buses. You will help load and unload students, secure seatbelts, wheels, and devices, and assist with wheelchair lifts as needed.

You will monitor student behavior, reinforce bus rules, provide guidance and emotional support, and maintain accurate transport records. This role requires collaboration with the Transportation Supervisor and bus drivers to meet individual student needs, including

Qualifications

• High School Diploma is required or equivalent.
• Ability to communicate clearly with students and staff.
• Ability to monitor and manage student behavior during transport.
• Familiarity with safety equipment such as seatbelts and wheelchairs.

Purpose

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience to perform assigned duties.

Essential Functions

• Assist in loading/unloading students and securing seatbelts, wheelchairs, and devices. Use wheelchair lifts as needed.
• Monitor and maintain student behavior and discipline; explain and reinforce bus rules; report issues.
• Support students by answering questions and offering guidance, emotional support and a friendly attitude.
• Maintain accurate records for students requiring additional attention during transport.
• Address special needs per each student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP).
• Perform additional duties as assigned to meet specific needs of the school or unit.
