Job Title: Bus Aide 26-27

Reports to: Supervisor of Transportation

Department/School: Transportation

Pay Grade: Auxiliary PG - 1

Wage Status: Non-exempt

Days: 177

Primary Purpose: Ride buses and assist drivers to ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with special needs.

Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities

Experience: None

Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street.
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on an daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver.
  • Monitor use of safety and adaptive equipment by students.
  • Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Supervise use of seat belts, safety vest's, or star seats by students.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, assisting students, etc.
  • Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices.
  • Help driver keep bus clean.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Report to work in a timely manner according to the assigned schedule.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; moderate lifting and carrying. Work outside and inside; work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts; moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. Must be able to evacuate self and students out of the bus in case of an emergency.

The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail and high levels of accuracy. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress. The employee must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues. Predictable and regular attendance expected.
