Job summary

The Odessa District Midland Maintenance Office is seeking a Transport Maint Crew Chief to lead a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators, performing skilled maintenance on roads and equipment. The role requires 5 years of roadway maintenance experience, a High School diploma, a Class A CDL with N endorsement and a valid driver's license, plus the ability to manage materials, safety, and scheduling.

This is a full-time, onsite position with strong benefits.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5 years of roadway maintenance experience required; college education or technical training may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
  • CDL Class A with N endorsement and valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while on route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience

5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without transmission restrictions and an "N" endorsement at the time of hire

Extensive knowledge of

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

Considerable knowledge of:

  • Incident management procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
