The role requires five years of roadway maintenance experience, a valid driver's license, and a Class A CDL. You will manage crews, estimate materials, operate light and heavy equipment, and ensure safety standards are met in all weather and emergency situations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • 5 years of roadway maintenance experience, with substitution allowed by related education or training.
  • Valid driver’s license and Class A CDL required at time of application.

Responsibilities

  • Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled maintenance activities.

Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned,
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application

Extensive knowledge of

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

Considerable knowledge of

  • Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures
  • Incident management procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Interpreting applicable information
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
