Organizational Unit Overview:
The Department of Surgery is a multi-faceted organization in a complex organizational structure. It is a department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for patient care, medical education and research. The department includes full-time faculty members in the sections of: general & bariatric surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, transplant surgery, trauma & acute care surgery. The department faculty provide surgical care to the people of eastern North Carolina, including pre-operative and post-operative care. The department provides surgical education to medical students and residents every day of the year. The department also has a vibrant research program including funded grants and clinical trials. The employees in the department support the clinical, education and research work of the department.
The Department of Surgery has a high-quality general surgery residency program with five categorical residents in each year who are competitively prepared for fellowships, academic positions, and direct entry into private practice. The Brody School of Medicine matriculates 92 students each year and is approved for class size expansion and construction of a new medical education building.
Job Duties:
The Department of Surgery at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine and ECU Health Medical Center are seeking a surgeon for the Division of Transplant Surgery and Immunology to contribute to the growth and development of the kidney and kidney pancreas program. The transplant program at ECU Health provides state of the art care to patients with end stage organ disease in eastern North Carolina. Our 29-county service area serves 1.4 million patients and has the fifth highest incidence of renal failure in the country. The program has experienced rapid growth over the past few years with an annual volume of 120+ renal transplants, both cadaveric and living donor. The program is expanding into robotic donor nephrectomy and transplantation having performed the first of these procedures in North Carolina. Dialysis access needs and a growing portion of the general surgical needs are provided by the transplant surgery division. Qualified candidates will be considered for a Clerkship Director role.
