Qualifications

• Associate's Degree with a science or computer background - preferred.
• Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Read and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
• Use effective written and verbal communication skills to cooperatively work with customers and employees.
• Listen well, respond to requests, take direction and engage in interactive dialogues with others.
• Seek the input of others to achieve consensus.
• Comprehend, remember and carry out instructions; ask questions to a preceptor or Supervisor as needed.
• Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians and other hospital departments.

Responsibilities

• The Laboratory Information Technician (LIT) receives specimens and verifies identification.
• Transfers information into the Laboratory Information System and sends specimens to testing areas.
• Retrieves laboratory data and reports and assists authorized personnel while maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Keeps surrounding area clean and organized.
• Utilizes computer systems to perform inquiries, order tests, transcribe results, and generate worksheets and reports.
• Communicates effectively with nursing staff, physicians and other hospital departments.
• Verifies patient demographic information on specimens matches the test order.
• Packages specimens for transport according to IATA guidelines and lab protocols.
