Overview
A leading energy infrastructure organization is seeking a Transmission System Operator to support the safe and reliable operation of a high-voltage transmission network from a centralized operations center. This role is responsible for monitoring and controlling transmission assets in real time, ensuring reliable electricity delivery across the system. The position uses Energy Management System (EMS) tools and real-time data to assess grid conditions, respond to system events, and maintain compliance with applicable reliability and regulatory standards. The role operates within a collaborative control room environment and plays a critical part in maintaining system reliability under both normal and emergency conditions.
Role Summary
The Transmission System Operator monitors, analyzes, and controls the electric transmission system to maintain stability, reliability, and safety. The role includes coordinating outages, performing switching operations, and communicating with field personnel and neighboring utilities. This position requires strong situational awareness, technical knowledge, and the ability to make real‑time decisions in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and respond to real-time transmission system conditions using EMS tools
- Operate and control transmission facilities in compliance with applicable reliability and regulatory standards
- Coordinate with field personnel and neighboring utilities to safely remove and restore equipment
- Monitor and manage voltage levels, power flows, and system stability
- Perform high-voltage switching operations during normal and emergency conditions
- Communicate planned and unplanned outages in accordance with operational and safety requirements
- Analyze system data and implement corrective actions to maintain grid reliability
- Support development and maintenance of transmission operations procedures and documentation
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with compliance and audit requirements
- Participate in required training to maintain applicable certifications
- Provide shift coverage and support a continuous operations environment
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree (or equivalent technical training) in electrical technology or a related field preferred; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education
- 2+ years of experience in the electric power industry, control room operations, or related technical field
- Ability to obtain required industry certifications (e.g., reliability operator certification) within a defined timeframe
- Strong understanding of electrical principles, system operations, and grid fundamentals
- Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts in a 24/7 operations environment
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating within organized electricity markets (e.g., ISO/RTO environments)
- Background in power plant operations, transmission operations, or electrical systems
- Experience with instrumentation and controls or system operations technologies
- Familiarity with energy management systems (EMS) or similar platforms
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
