Job summary

Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. seeks a Transmission System Analysis & EMT Modeling Technical Leader to direct EMT studies for transmission networks.

The role centers on leading advanced EMT analyses, modeling inverter‑based resources, and ensuring grid reliability in planning and operation contexts. Responsibilities include guiding junior engineers, coordinating with utilities and regulators, and delivering technical reports and proposals.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Electrical engineer with a PhD, emphasizing power systems.
  • Strong experience with control system theory and analysis.
  • Familiarity with wind/solar inverter modeling and simulation.
  • Strong experience with electromagnetic transient simulation tools (preferably PSCAD, EMTP, PowerFactory).
  • Strong experience with electromechanical dynamics simulation tools (preferably PSS/E and PSLF).
  • Strong programming skills (preferably in Python and Matlab).
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed EMT simulations and studies for transmission systems using industry‑standard software tools.
  • Develop and validate models for inverter‑based resources, renewable energy systems, HVDC systems, FACTS devices, and protection/control systems.
  • Perform transient overvoltage analysis, insulation coordination studies, switching transient analysis, harmonic and resonance studies, fault and dynamic system performance evaluations, and grid interconnection assessments.
  • Support renewable integration studies involving solar, wind, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and islanded systems.
  • Review and interpret utility interconnection requirements and applicable industry guidelines.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and engineering documentation for clients and stakeholders.
  • Lead technical discussions with utilities, project developers, OEMs, and regulatory agencies.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on EMT modeling and analysis methodologies.
  • Support proposal development and business development initiatives as needed.
  • Strong proficiency with one or more of the following software tools: PSCAD, EMTP, RTDS, PSS®E, and PowerFactory.
  • Strong experience conducting EMT studies in utility‑scale power systems.
  • Strong understanding of power system dynamics, inverter‑based resources (IBRs), protection and controls, power electronics, and grid code compliance.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.

Transmission System Analysis & EMT Modeling Technical Leader
Location: EI - UK Home Office

This is a Technical Leader position for an Engineer to support R&D projects related to EMT Studies & Power System Analysis. The candidate will be responsible for leading and executing advanced electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies to support the planning, design, integration, and operation of electric power systems. The role provides technical expertise in transient analysis, inverter‑based resource integration, system stability, and grid reliability assessments for transmission networks.
