Job summary

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of NERC reliability standards and planning practices.
  • Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform transmission planning studies including power flow, contingency, voltage, and transient stability analysis.
  • Develop, maintain, and validate transmission system models and power flow base cases.
  • Evaluate system performance and identify reliability, capacity, and operational limitations.
  • Model and compare alternatives to address identified transmission system needs.
  • Support long-range transmission planning and development of future capital projects.
  • Perform feasibility, system impact, load service, and generation interconnection studies.
  • Apply applicable NERC reliability standards and regional planning criteria.
  • Prepare technical reports, study results, and engineering recommendations.
  • Coordinate technical information with internal teams, consultants, interconnected utilities, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in regional transmission planning activities and industry working groups.
  • At senior levels, lead complex planning studies, oversee consultants, review technical work, and mentor less-experienced engineers.

Job description

A large electric utility is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to support the analysis, planning, and long-term reliability of its electric transmission system.

This position will perform power system studies, evaluate system performance, identify reliability and capacity concerns, and develop solutions for future transmission improvements. Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis is preferred.
  • Experience with transmission planning, power system analysis, utility operations, or related power engineering work.
  • Experience with power flow and stability analysis software; PowerWorld experience is preferred.
  • Understanding of transmission system modeling, contingency analysis, voltage analysis, and transient stability.
  • Knowledge of NERC reliability standards and electric utility planning practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, and communication skills.
Experience Levels
  • Engineer I: Entry level; prior professional engineering experience not required.
  • Engineer II: 1+ year of power engineering experience.
  • Engineer III: 3–5+ years of power engineering experience, including transmission planning experience.
  • Engineer IV: 6+ years of power engineering experience, including significant transmission planning experience.
  • Engineer V: 10+ years of power engineering experience, including 5+ years in transmission planning.
  • Principal Engineer: 10+ years of progressively responsible transmission planning experience with demonstrated technical leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license for senior-level candidates.
  • Electric utility experience.
  • Experience with generation and load interconnections, reliability compliance, and long-range transmission planning.
  • Experience leading complex studies and providing technical guidance to other engineers.
