Job summary

Duke Energy invites applications for a Line Technician Learner based in North or South Carolina. This entry-level role supports higher-level technicians while developing complex technical and leadership skills in line construction and maintenance.

Responsibilities include safety adherence, basic substation tasks, reads prints, and coordinating small projects under supervision. A CDL may be required and relocation is possible for the right candidate.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required with progress toward Line Tech I/II.
• Experience in transmission or distribution maintenance or construction preferred.
• Ability to safely lead small jobs and coordinate with others as needed.

Responsibilities

• Follow safety rules and company practices at all times.
• Lead small, low-risk maintenance or construction tasks when directed.
• Read prints to determine isolation of protection circuits without impacting critical equipment.
• Organize and plan substation work activities and equipment movements.
• Perform infrared scans and monitor equipment conditions where applicable.
• Communicate clearly, both written and verbally, with team members and supervisors.

A Line Technician will assist a higher-level technician and sometime safely lead a lower-level technician in activities associated with line construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop complex technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrated a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices
• Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance practices
• Demonstrate the ability to safely lead small jobs and work independent of direct leadership
• Can organize construction and maintenance work and create over all implementation/maintenance plans
• Advanced understanding of reading prints and determine how to isolate protection circuits without jeopardizing critical equipment
• Demonstrate the ability to methodically/logically organize substation work activities
• Demonstrate the ability to operate bucket, digger derrick truck other areal devices
• Ability to respond to minor call outs
• Understands limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help
• Can lead small and low risk maintenance or construction projects
• Basic understanding of pow er factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, and leakage reactance testing and interpret results
• Can assist with the installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers/switches or other temporary equipment
• Ability to perform infrared scanning substation equipment
• Clear understanding of regulatory compliance and the importance for accurate data and timely completion of assigned work
• Basic understanding of line equipment isolation and clearances and grounding practices
• Demonstrates the ability to complete the requirements for Switching and Tagging on both the Transmission and Distribution systems
• Demonstrates the ability to complete maintenance/construction activities on all line equipment
• Demonstrates advance verbal and written communications skills
• Ability to sit for 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting on a transmission class equipment
• Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
• Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
• Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
• Ability to distinguish colors

• Minimum of 1 year of Transmission or Distribution maintenance or construction experience or equivalent job-related and educational experience

Working Conditions

• Demonstrated availability for after- hour’s work and call out rotation
• Ability to lift and carry 75 lbs.

• Must be capable of working on elevated work surfaces
• This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.
• The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading

• Must have a permanent residence within 45 minutes from their base location.

• Ability to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the state for which you are hire within one year of hire.

• Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours; may be on ground, in a bucket on a line truck, or at the top of a distribution pole
• Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault
• Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
• Ability to lift, push and pull up to 75 pounds
• Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
• Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
• Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision)
• Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
