Job summary

Duke Energy is looking for a Line Technician Learner to support line construction and maintenance activities in the Carolinas. You will assist more senior technicians and may lead small, low-risk tasks, applying safety practices and technical knowledge.

You will help organize work, read prints, isolate circuits, and participate in keeping equipment and substations performing reliably. The role requires some travel and the ability to work in a team environment on elevated structures.

Qualifications

  • Line Tech Learner and Line Tech I qualifications required.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow safety rules and work practices.
  • Basic understanding of reading prints and isolation of protection circuits.

Responsibilities

  • Assist higher-level technicians and lead small, low-risk tasks.
  • Organize construction and maintenance work and create implementation plans.
  • Demonstrate ability to operate bucket trucks and other aerial devices.
  • Support regulatory compliance and accurate data collection.
  • Attend to after-hours calls and respond to duty rotations.

Job description

A Line Technician will assist a higher-level technician and sometime safely lead a lower-level technician in activities associated with line construction and maintenance activities. Incumbents are expected to develop complex technical and leadership skills and the ability to work independently and lead small activities with low to moderate levels of complexity.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrated a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices
  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance practices
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely lead small jobs and work independent of direct leadership
  • Can organize construction and maintenance work and create over all implementation/maintenance plans
  • Advanced understanding of reading prints and determine how to isolate protection circuits without jeopardizing critical equipment
  • Demonstrate the ability to methodically/logically organize substation work activities
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate bucket, digger derrick truck other areal devices
  • Ability to respond to minor call outs
  • Understands limitations, never assumes, and will STOP to seek help
  • Can lead small and low risk maintenance or construction projects
  • Basic understanding of power factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, and leakage reactance testing and interpret results
  • Can assist with the installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers/switches or other temporary equipment
  • Ability to perform infrared scanning substation equipment
  • Clear understanding of regulatory compliance and the importance for accurate data and timely completion of assigned work
  • Basic understanding of line equipment isolation and clearances and grounding practices
  • Demonstrates the ability to complete the requirements for Switching and Tagging on both the Transmission and Distribution systems
  • Demonstrates the ability to complete maintenance/construction activities on all line equipment
  • Demonstrates advance verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to sit for 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting on a transmission class equipment
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
  • Ability to distinguish colors

  • Minimum of 1 year of Transmission or Distribution maintenance or construction experience or equivalent job-related and educational experience

Working Conditions

  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading
  • This position is based out on North and South Carolina
Specific Requirements

  • Ability to successfully complete the Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers (VAL)
  • Ability to successfully complete Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
  • Ability to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the state for which you are hire within one year of hire.
  • DOT Physical DOT Certification Respirator Clearance
  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours; may be on ground, in a bucket on a line truck, or at the top of a distribution pole
  • Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths
  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
  • Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision)
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight-rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
  • This position has a residency requirement. You must reside within 45 minutes of the assigned operations site. In order to meet with aforementioned position requirement, you will be required to relocate from your current residence within 12 months of your start date. Relocation will be entirely at your own expense.
