Job summary

Duke Energy is hiring an entry level Substation Technician Learner to assist higher level technicians in substation construction and maintenance. You will develop intermediate skills and gain independence while working on field projects across North Carolina and nearby regions.

Candidates should have a High School Diploma or GED, with preferred associates in engineering tech, and be prepared for a safety-first environment requiring CDL Class A within a year and residency near the base location.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Residency near base location (within commuting distance).
• Ability to pass background check for NERC/CIP compliance and Duke aptitude test.
• Must have valid State Driver's License and ability to obtain CDL Class A within one year.

Responsibilities

• Understand and follow company safety work practices and safety rules.
• Develop basic understanding of substation equipment diagrams and power system drawings.
• Assist in substation construction and maintenance; operate in field settings.
• Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
• Work with isolation/grounding practices and basic electrical/mechanical troubleshooting.
• Learn to operate bucket, digger derrick trucks, and other aerial devices.

This is the first or entry craft level of the Substation Tech hierarchy. A Substation Technician Learner will assist a higher level technician in activities associated substation construction and maintenance. Incumbents are expected to develop intermediate skills and the ability to work with greater independence.

Responsibilities

• Clearly understand the importance of company safe work practices and safety rules
• Basic understanding of the Human Performance Tools and requirements
• Basic understanding of the isolation of substation equipment and grounding practices
• Demonstrates good verbal and written communications skills
• Basic understanding of the electrical drawings (substation equipment schematics and power system drawings)
• Basic understanding NERC compliance and the importance for accurate data and timely completion of assigned work
• Basic electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
• Develops the ability to think methodically and arrange activities in logical order
• Basic understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics systems
• Exposure to Transmission and Distribution system switching activities
• Develop a basic understanding of AC and DC basic principles
• Demonstrate the basic ability to operate bucket, digger derrick truck and other areal devices

Working Conditions

• This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
• This position is based out on North and South Carolina
• Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

Specific Requirements

• Must have a valid State Driver's License and the ability to obtain a CDL Class A Driver's License in the state for which you are hired with in one year.
• Residency Requirement: Must have a permanent residence approximately forty-five minutes from their base location
• Ability to pass any required back ground check for NERC/CIP/Nuclear compliance
• Must pass appropriate level of Duke aptitude test
