Job summary

Mary Dickson seeks a Transmission & Distribution Utility teammate to support installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution systems. The role emphasizes safety, DOT compliance, and timely response to emergencies.

You will assist with equipment operation, site restoration, and coordination with the team to ensure reliable water delivery to customers. This position requires a CDL A, physical endurance, and teamwork in outdoor environments.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, and related infrastructure.
• Support trenching, backfilling, and safety compliance during excavations.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, pumps, and light/heavy machinery.
• Conduct routine inspections of distribution systems for leaks or maintenance needs.
• Assist in locating underground utilities prior to excavation.
• Respond to water main breaks, leaks, and emergency calls, including after-hours.
• Collect basic field data and document work performed.
• Transport materials, tools, and equipment to job sites.
• Maintain a clean, safe work environment and adhere to PPE programs.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Transmission & Distribution Utility person supports the installation, maintenance, and repair of water transmission and distribution systems.This role assists in ensuring reliable, and efficient delivery of water to customers.The position requires strict adherence to safety standards, environmental regulations, and water quality requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water mains, service lines, valves, hydrants, meter pits, and related infrastructure
• Support excavation, trenching, and backfilling activities in accordance with safety regulations
• Operate and maintain tools and equipment such as hand tools, power tools, pumps, and light/heavy machinery
• Perform routine inspections of water distribution systems to identify leaks, breaks, or maintenance needs
• Assist in locating underground utilities prior to excavation
• Respond to water main breaks, leaks, and emergency service calls, including after-hours and storm events
• Collect basic field data and assist with documentation of work performed
• Load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment to job sites
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including vehicles and job sites
• Participate in and maintain compliance with all required PPE, safety training and certifications, including First Aid/CPR, asbestos awareness, forklift operation, traffic control, and other regulatory or company-mandated programs
• Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate daily operations
• Operate two-way radio equipment to maintain clear and effective communication with team members and dispatch
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
• Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control measures in accordance with safety standards and work zone requirements
• Perform site restoration activities, including placement of topsoil, asphalt and Concrete.Returning areas to proper grade and condition
• Support other operational or maintenance activities as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with clean driving record in accordance with company and insurance standards
• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, digging, standing, and working in various weather conditions
• Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with tools and equipment
• Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment
• Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance
• Ability to successfully complete a respirator medical evaluation and wear respiratory protective equipment as required.
• Ability to pass DOT physical, drug and alcohol screening, and background check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance, construction, public works, or related field.
• Prior experience in water utility or construction
• Knowledge of water distribution systems, including mains, hydrants, and valves
• Experience with trench safety and excavation practices OSHA certifications or safety training CPR/First aid Training
• Basic understanding of water quality and regulatory standards
• Experience operating heavy equipment.
• Experience in underground utility construction and repair.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Heavy- Exerting 50 to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or more than 50lbs.of force frequently and/or more than 20 lbs.of force constantly to move objects.
• Physical Demand requirements are more than those for Heavy work.
• Perform physically demanding work including digging, climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, heavy equipment, and construction sites
• May involve confined space entry and exposure to wet or muddy conditions
• Subject to on-call schedules, overtime, and emergency response duties
• Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• As conditions require, ability to wear respiratory protective equipment includes a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) for extended periods.
