Job summary

The City of Fredericksburg, Virginia is seeking a Transit Planner to support the Transit Strategic Plan, manage projects, and analyze routes and services to improve punctuality and ridership. The role emphasizes data collection, analysis, and public-facing outreach.

Knowledge of ADA standards and Title VI populations is valued. Ideal candidates have a Bachelor’s degree in transportation or urban planning and experience with GIS, ITS, and Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, urban planning or related field; transit/local government experience preferred.
• Minimum of one year of responsible administrative work.
• Knowledge of transit operations, government laws, regulations.
• Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/PowerPoint).
• Experience with ArcGIS, GIS software, and Intelligent Transit Software (ITS).
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.

What You’ll Do

The Transit Planner supports FXBGO!'s transportation planning by managing projects and activities related to the Transit Strategic Plan. Key responsibilities include:

Route and Service Optimization

• Recommend changes to bus routes and paratransit services to improve punctuality and increase ridership, as well as analyzing service change requests and new bus stop proposals.

Compliance and Strategic Planning

• Assist in the development of the Transit Strategic Plan, ensuring compliance with regulations like ADA standards, and conducting research to support goals for transit-dependent and Title VI populations.

Data Collection and Analysis

• Gather and analyze data to support scheduling, route design, service evaluation, and planning. This includes conducting surveys, analyzing transit data, and interpreting statistics for transit planning.

Communication and Outreach

• Support communication strategies and outreach related to the Transit Strategic Plan. This includes preparing reports, presenting recommendations, and creating publication materials such as brochures and fact sheets.

Minimum Qualifications

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, urban planning or related field; experience in transit or local government preferred
• A minimum of one (1) year of experience performing responsible administrative work, and/or equivalent education and experience
• Knowledge of transit operations, management practices, government, applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations affecting public transportation; principles, practices and techniques of transit or urban planning
• Experience in Microsoft Office Suite; including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Experience with ArcGIS, GIS software, and Intelligent Transit Software (ITS) preferred
• Experience with Adobe Suites
