Job summary

City of Alexandria is seeking a Transit Driver to operate a 35,000-pound vehicle on established routes, ensuring passenger safety and timely service. You will perform pre-trip inspections, collect fares, and assist passengers, including those using accessibility equipment.

The ideal candidate holds a Class B CDL with passenger and air brakes endorsements (must obtain within 60 days of hire) and has high school level education or equivalent.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; previous experience with large passenger vehicles or transit operations preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class B commercial driver’s license.
• Must obtain passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement within 60 days of hire and maintain throughout employment.

Responsibilities

• Operates a 35,000-pound vehicle on an established route according to a time schedule and picks up and discharges passengers; performs pre-trip inspections.
• Drives safely, maintains control of the vehicle, and obeys traffic regulations.
• Assists passengers through verbal guidance and operation of accessibility equipment; secures bicycles, wheelchairs, strollers, and other items when needed.
• Collects fares from and interacts with passengers of varying ages and abilities.
• Reports delays, mechanical problems, and accidents; responds to emergencies.
• Completes daily records and logs and may operate an ADA accessible van.
