The City of Las Cruces Government is seeking a part-time transit vehicle operator to assist with safe and secure mobility services. The role involves operating vehicles, assisting passengers, collecting fares, and maintaining safety in transit operations. Candidates should possess a high school diploma and customer service experience, with bilingual skills preferred.
Operates para-transit vehicles of various sizes in response to scheduled pickup assignments and in accordance with specific manifest instructions. Provides assistance to passengers as needed, collects appropriate fares, assures comfort and safety, and completes required daily inspections and reports.
Environmental Factors
Work is performed in a transit vehicle and in a transit operations traffic environment. The employee is required to exit the vehicle to ensure safe operations and to assist passengers.
Physical Factors
Moderate physical requirements, including frequent bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting, pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying, and reaching from all levels.
Work Situation Factors
The position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, and frequent work at night and beyond normal business hours. Regular attendance is essential to ensure service continuity. The position is subject to drug testing per applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policy.

This posting is for a part-time, regular, non-exempt, union-represented position. It may be used to fill multiple vacancies, including positions that are regular or contract, and may be full-time, part-time, or temporary in other sections of the Transit Department.
This position is graded BC06.
Qualifications include a high school diploma plus six months of customer service experience. A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered. Prior experience operating passenger transport vehicles, working with the elderly or disabled, and bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
Valid driver’s license required with an acceptable driving record. Specific license requirements may apply.
Knowledge of: City and state traffic regulations, signs & signals, safety procedures, and City policies.
Skills in: Safe operation of transit vehicles, reading maps and schedules, quick reaction to safety or security issues, and courteous customer service.
Ability to: Prioritize tasks, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and maintain effective relations with colleagues and the public.
