Job description

The City of Albany is currently accepting applications for a full-time Transit Driver/Operator position.We are seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to operate diesel and gasoline-powered buses on established routes, assist passengers, and maintain non-mechanical aspects of the buses. In this role, you will be instrumental in providing safe, reliable, and courteous transportation services to our community. Additional Salary Information:
Effective July 1, 2025, this position will receive an additional cost-of-living adjustment (salary increase) of three percent (3.0%).

Benefits include:
  • Excellent benefit package for the employee and qualified family members with low monthly out-of-pocket cost. Employee-paid premium is approximately $51 per month for employee-only coverage up to a maximum of $147 per month for family coverage.
  • City-paid contribution to a VEBA Trust account for out-of-pocket healthcare expenses with an annual contribution of $1,000 for employee-only and $2,000 for employee plus dependent(s).
  • Paid time off
    • 8 hours of vacation leave per month, with progressive increases
    • 8hours of sick leave per month
    • 10 paid holidays and 3 floating holidays per year

The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed.   1. Operates transit buses on various established assigned routes and adheres to schedule safely and legally.
  2. Responds to public inquiries about bus schedules and procedures; and provides assistance when necessary.
  3. Maintains an accurate accounting of daily passenger sheets, vehicle maintenance check forms, and other related records that may be required.
  4. Reports any changes to assigned routes or stops and all bus and passenger accidents immediately to supervisor.
  5. Responsible for passengers' safety including the enforcement of passenger regulations such as no smoking or eating on the bus.
  6. Performs daily vehicle safety checks before operating the bus and reports any vehicle malfunctions to supervisor.
  7. Maintains buses including fueling and cleaning; ensures supervisor is aware of routine service and repair needs of assigned vehicles.
  8. May perform minor maintenance such as changing lamps as needed.
  9. Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Regards everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
  10. Works to create a high-performance work culture by demonstrating a positive attitude and modeling the City’s mission, vision, and values. Conducts self with high integrity, proactive in conserving City resources, and seeks and incorporates customer feedback for ongoing performance improvement. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
  11. Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the city through own actions.
  12. Effectively promotes and supervises a safe work environment. Complies with all safety rules and performs work in a safe manner. Ensures staff maintain a safe working environment in compliance with Federal, State, and City health and safety guidelines and regulations.
  13. Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  14. Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
  15. Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance.
  16. Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  17. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
  18. Adheres to appropriate attire, grooming, and hygiene standards established for the position.

This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position.

Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or its equivalent. andone year of job-related experience oran equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Special Requirements:
  1. Possession of a valid Oregon Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and a driving record that meets the City’s driving standards.
  2. Ability to pass post-offer background check, including driving history, and job-related physical required.
  3. In accordance with Human Resources substance abuse policies, incumbents in this position are subject to the City's Drug & Alcohol testing program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:operating a transit bus in a safe and efficient manner; develop and maintain defensive driving skills; learn and implement city procedures, regulations, and requirements with respect to safety.
Skill in:the operation of listed tools and equipment.
Ability to:operate a transit bus in a safe and efficient manner; develop and maintain defensive driving skills; learn and implement city procedures, regulations, and requirements with respect to safety; effectively use oral and written communication in the performance of duties and responsibilities; use independent judgment and make decisions without direct supervision; report to work regularly and on time; provide high quality service to the public and other employees; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; and operate computers for data entry.

Work Environment:
Work is performed in the field, operating the bus, regardless of weather conditions where an employee is exposed to noise, fumes, and road vibration. Work is also performed in the transit garage. Employee may be required to work evenings and weekends.

Physical Demands:
The factors described herein are representative of, but not all-inclusive of, those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the job. The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Tools & Equipment Used:
In the performance of job duties, the employee will operate commercial bus, phone, two-way radio, hatch key, tire thumper, wheelchair lift, tools for bus maintenance and other related equipment.
