Job summary

The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a Transit Driver to operate buses on designated routes and deliver safe, courteous public transportation. Training is provided for CDL permits with passenger and air brake endorsements, with emphasis on welcoming and accessible service for all riders.

Responsibilities include operating vehicles, collecting fares, assisting passengers (ADA-compliant), pre/post-trip checks, and accurate reporting. A valid U.S. Driver’s License and CDL permit are required by hire.

Qualifications

• Previous experience operating buses or CDL vehicles is preferred
• Experience providing customer service or working with the public is preferred
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and respectfully
• Ability to work collaboratively with individuals of varied backgrounds and needs

Responsibilities

• Operates transit vehicles on scheduled routes in a safe and responsible manner
• Provides respectful and inclusive service to all passengers, including individuals with disabilities, older adults, and people from diverse backgrounds
• Collects and records fares accurately; operates fare collection equipment in line with department procedures
• Responds to public inquiries and acknowledges concerns or complaints with professionalism and empathy
• Prepares and submits required reports and record sheets daily
• Provides assistance to passengers in compliance with ADA regulations and City policies, including operating wheelchair lifts/ramps and securing mobility devices
• Conducts pre-trip vehicle checks and ensures the cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness of the bus
• Performs post-trip inspections, including checking for lost items, securing the vehicle, and refueling
• Shares accurate route, schedule, and fare information with passengers
• Maintains reliable attendance and punctuality
• Performs other related duties as assigned
