Job summary

We have the following position available:

The Transfer Station Supervisor manages the daily operations of the transfer station and assists the overall management of the entire facility. The Transfer Station Supervisor ensures the safe/efficient receipt of waste at the transfer station and its processing/shipment to landfills and end-users. Ensures employees are working in a safe, efficient manner. Will exercise independent judgment when determining workflow, staffing, and monitoring safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Manage day-to-day operations of Transfer Station and Bio-Separator operation.
• Will coordinate receipt of refuse into the Transfer Station and scheduling/loading of transfer trailers.
• Will coordinate receipt of SSO food into Bio-Separator tip floor, processing of food through the Bio-Separator, and shipment of food slurry to AD facilities.
• Resolve customer and employee problems according to company policy.
• Ensure Transfer Station team provides excellent customer service.
• Supervise and coordinate the efforts of Equipment Operators, Spotters, and Load Inspector.
• Implement and enforce work schedules to ensure proper/efficient labor resources necessary to operate Transfer Station and Bio-Separator.
• Ensure that Transfer Station Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are implemented and followed to achieve efficient and safe Transfer Station operations.
• Will ensure rolling stock is properly operated by Equipment Operators and is not abused.
• Ensure safe traffic flow of customer vehicles into, throughout, and exiting the facility.
• Will ensure rolling stock and fixed equipment is properly cleaned, receives preventive maintenance, and repairs.
• Provide direction to contract hauler supervisor to ensure adequate trailers are available for efficient loading for the transfer of refuse to the landfills. Manage refuse shipments to the landfills/accounts to ensure contractual obligations are met.
• Monitor incoming trash streams for diversion opportunities such as identifying fiber rich loads and send to the commercial sortline for processing. Manage carpets loads to ensure they are cleaned, stored, and scheduled to ensure safe and effective storage.
• Follows and administers company safety programs by conducting monthly safety meetings, facility inspections, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and other agency regulations.
• Will participate in the recruiting of new team members to fill open positions.
• Will provides new employee general and safety training.
• Ensure transfer employees receive equipment operation and other transfer station training to perform their jobs. Provide proper after-training observation to ensure training is effective. Perform employee operations inspections and provide retraining as needed.
• Investigate, complete, and submit reports for work related injuries and accidents in a timely manner.
• Will administer corporate policies and ensure safety compliance.
• Ensure load check program is properly implemented by making sure inspections are being completed accurately, reviewed and properly recorded.
• Make continuous efforts to maximize production and efficiency without compromising safety of employees or customers—tons per load, tons per labor hour, etc.
• Will ensure proper audits and reporting are performed in compliance with SB1383.
• Manage HHW storage area, including the processing/handling/storage of HHW. Coordinate the scheduling of HHW contractor to package and recycle/dispose of HHW.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing waste disposal, environmental standards, and safety protocols. Keep up-to-date with changes in regulations and implement necessary adjustments to operations.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Must have demonstrated leadership, problem solving and organizational skills plus the ability to maintain and promote a team work environment.
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to coach and develop subordinates.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills are required, including the ability to effectively interface with the general public.
• Must be bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with equipment used in waste handling.
• Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to changing operational needs

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• Must have working knowledge of all transfer station operations, including loading of trash, compaction, and basic equipment background.
• Must be a problem solver for both customers and employees.
• Will be required to attend and pass First-Aid/CPR and 40-hour HAZWOPER training classes.

PHYSICAL:

• Must have the ability to work in the operations environment standing on feet for several hours each day.
• Must have the ability to operate equipment.
• Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Must be able to work effectively outdoors and under extreme seasonal weather conditions.
• Potential hazards are exposure to excess amounts of dust, chemical exposure due to illegal disposal of hazardous waste or improper handling of materials. Also, possibility of being hit by flying debris, possibility of stepping on or being cut by sharp objects and exposure to loud noise.
• Will use company required PPE/safety equipment that will make his/her duties safe.
  • Hard hat, safety vest, safety glasses/goggles, steel/tech toe work boots, hearing protection (ear plugs), respirator, and gloves.
