Job summary

Resource Renew, the brand of WLSSD, seeks a seasonal Part-Time Transfer Station Attendant in Duluth, Minnesota. This on-site role supports daily operations at our Yard Waste site, operates equipment, assists customers, and helps keep facilities safe and environmentally responsible.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years' verifiable customer service experience.
  • One year experience operating trucks, loaders, forklifts or other heavy equipment.
  • One year cashier or money handling experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Possess a Class "D" driver\'s license.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain solid waste collection and transfer station facilities in accordance with established procedures and permit requirements.
  • Operate a variety of material-handling equipment (e.g., loaders, compactors, forklifts) safely and effectively.
  • Inspect incoming loads to ensure compliance with disposal rules and identify prohibited or hazardous materials.
  • Provide clear disposal instructions to customers and promote proper separation of reusable and recyclable materials.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Deliver high‑quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Skill in operating heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to locate, identify, and report minor equipment deficiencies.
  • Ability to perform basic preventive and predictive equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to identify reusable and recyclable materials for diversion from disposal.
  • Ability to operate cash, credit card and charge account systems.
  • Ability to accurately handle money, provide change, and complete bank deposits.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, co‑workers, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to perform all job functions safely and efficiently.

Job description

Join Resource Renew as a seasonal Part-Time Transfer Station Attendant. If you enjoy working outdoors, operating equipment, helping customers, and making a positive impact on your community, this seasonal role might be a great fit. As a Transfer Station Attendant, you'll support daily operations at our solid waste collection facilities, keeping the site safe, and environmentally responsible. This on-site role is located in Duluth, Minnesota at our Yard Waste site and has a schedule of 10-hour shifts, Wednesday - Saturday during the season of April through November.

This part‑time role also offers the chance to return year after year, making it a great fit for someone who enjoys consistent seasonal work, hands‑on tasks, and being outside in all weather conditions.

Resource Renew, the brand of Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD), is committed to preventing pollution and protecting the environment, including the region's most precious resource - Lake Superior. Founded as a special purpose unit of government created by the Minnesota Legislature in 1971 to address serious environmental pollution problems in the lower St. Louis River Basin, Resource Renew provides wastewater and solid waste services and oversight for a 530 square mile region around Duluth, Minnesota. Our facilities include a main wastewater treatment plant, multiple pump stations, and solid waste collection sites of varied types.

WHAT DOES A TRANSFER STATION ATTENDENT DO?

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years' verifiable customer service experience

SELECTION PROCESS & TESTING INFORMATION

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications. Those who meet the minimum qualifications will be given an examination, which may consist of a written exam, a presentation, a hands‑on test or an oral exam. Final selection will include a panel interview. Passing the examinations and interviews will require a score of 70% or higher.
