The Position

This position is located at Lake Chabot, in Castro Valley, CA


ELIGIBILITY:

Per Article 21.1(e) of the AFSCME Agreement, an employee who has transferred is precluded from transferring again for 6 months. All new employees are ineligible for voluntary transfer during their probationary period. All employees who transfer to or are hired in positions of longer or shorter duration are ineligible to transfer within 6 months of the effective date of such change.


The names of those requesting transfer will be given to the appropriate hiring supervisor or manager after the deadline. All job postings are full-time, 12-month positions, unless otherwise noted.


GENERAL FUNCTION

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.


GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under supervision, provides varied visitor services; collects visitor fees and charges; performs unskilled maintenance within the immediate area of a kiosk; and performs related duties as assigned.


CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

This is the first level within the park operations series. Employees within this class are distinguished from other classifications in the series in that this classification performs a variety of visitor services as well as unskilled maintenance within the immediate kiosk area.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.


WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:


  • Provide a variety of visitor services

  • Collect visitor fees

  • Perform a variety of visitor services as well as unskilled maintenance within the immediate kiosk area.

  • Positions in this classification often include public contact and therefore bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.


IDEAL CANDIDATE:


  • Experienced in Customer Service and working with the public

  • Responsible to solve immediate issues with creative positive solutions

  • The ability to handle cash

  • Interested in learning about the Park District in order to inform and educate the public.


Example of Duties


  • Performs visitor services: provides information and directions;

  • Answers phones;

  • Responds to complaints;

  • Collects appropriate fees;

  • Sells memberships/bait/tackle, etc.;

  • Registers campers;

  • Maintains professional relations/communications with crew, supervisor, District staff, concessionaires, tenants, and other agencies; and assists with special events and reservations groups.

  • Completes daily and monthly revenue reports; balances cash;

  • prepares bank deposit slips; performs boat and trailer inspections;

  • Keeps various logs, such as daily logs, number of visitors, campground usage, etc.

  • Responds to emergencies, such as medicals, searches, park fires and other requests for aid as training allows; operates radio (control 1) to provide and coordinate information;

  • Provides traffic control;

  • Completes medical/incident reports.

  • Performs routine maintenance work: picks up and removes litter, cleans and stocks restrooms, empties garbage cans and changes trash liners, and removes graffiti within the kiosk area/inspection area. Opens park; posts emergency signs as directed.

  • Protects natural resources: recognizes and protects plant life, wildlife, artifacts and structures;

  • Assists with removing exotic and non-native plants within the kiosk area/inspection area.

  • Operates District vehicles: checks fluids, tires, belts.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade,
AND


Experience: Six (6) months of paid experience, demonstrating the ability to handle cash and provide quality customer service.
AND


License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service to internal staff and external customers and park users.


Condition of Employment


  • Must wear a Park District uniform.

  • May be required to work unusual hours, nights, and weekends.

  • May be required to work in a variety of work environments.
