DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The UW Medicine - Department of Public Safety is a team of certified security professionals dedicated to promoting and maintaining hospital security and safety by enforcing rules and regulations to provide for the safety of patients, staff, visitors, and the facilities at UW Medicine hospitals and clinics.

Position is based at Harborview Medical Center

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

The Training Specialist serves as the lead training authority for the UW Medicine Department of Public Safety (DPS). This position is responsible for the comprehensive development, coordination, delivery, and oversight of training programs for all DPS personnel, including officers, supervisors, and dispatchers. The incumbent also provides entity-wide training for UW Medicine staff in subject matter areas identified by DPS leadership.

This position ensures that all training programs align with constitutional standards, Washington State law, UW Medicine policy, healthcare security best practices, and department operational needs. The Training Specialist serves as a subject matter expert in use of force, defensive tactics, de-escalation, and workplace violence prevention while overseeing curriculum development, training compliance, and program evaluation.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Training Specialist will be responsible for the development, administration, and delivery of the following:

  • Training Program Administration and Coordination
  • Course Development
  • Training Course Delivery
  • Course Evaluation and Modification
  • Use of Force Investigations and Training Oversight
  • Specialized Program Oversight
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Education, Healthcare or related field
  • Four to Five years of experience training, mentoring, or leading security, law enforcement, military, or public safety personnel
  • Experience delivering classroom instruction, multimedia presentations, and practical demonstrations
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare security operations, use of force principles, and public safety training methodologies
  • Ability to develop curriculum and instructional materials
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and individuals in stressful or confrontational situations
  • Proficiency in report writing, training documentation, and presentation software
  • Ability to obtain and maintain instructor certifications relevant to assigned training disciplines
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
