POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Training Specialist supports Montana’s AmeriCorps programs and the Commission on Community Service by assessing program training needs, coordinating learning and development opportunities, and strengthening capacity across the state’s national service network. This role develops and refreshes an annual training plan, manages training delivery through in person and virtual formats, and connects grantees with a statewide and national network of technical assistance providers. The position also advances an ethic of volunteerism and service by representing the Governor’s Office of Community Service (GOCS) through outreach, presentations, and collaboration with partner organizations.

You will gain statewide and national professional networks through collaboration with AmeriCorps programs, training providers, and community partners, opening doors for future growth in public and nonprofit leadership. You will also have the opportunity to design and lead high profile events and trainings that strengthen civic engagement, service, and volunteerism across the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate statewide training initiatives: Lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of training and technical assistance for AmeriCorps State programs, members, and Commission staff.
  • Assess and respond to training needs: Gather input from grantees and partners to shape annual training priorities and ensure learning programs strengthen performance and compliance.
  • Plan major learning events: Coordinate key events such as the ServeMontana Symposium and bimonthly partner calls, managing logistics, speakers, and participant engagement.
  • Deliver presentations and workshops: Facilitate in person and virtual sessions that use adult learning principles to build participant skills and confidence in national service program management.
  • Promote service collaboration: Represent GOCS as a liaison with organizations in the service, nonprofit, and volunteer networks to share best practices and expand capacity.
  • Support program excellence: Provide responsive, courteous customer service to AmeriCorps programs, community partners, and Commission members.
  • Administer federal grant requirements: Reinforce understanding of AmeriCorps and Office policies in training content and communications to promote responsible grant administration.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to:

  • Training design and delivery: Develop and facilitate effective training using adult learning methods, both in person and online.
  • Program and project coordination: Organize multiple initiatives simultaneously, managing details, timelines, and outcomes with accuracy and accountability.
  • Communication and presentation: Speak and write clearly, prepare professional materials, and deliver engaging presentations to diverse audiences, including staff, grantees, and public officials.
  • Customer and partner relations: Build positive relationships with AmeriCorps programs, national service partners, and volunteer networks through respectful, solution focused interactions.
  • Event planning and logistics: Plan and execute statewide meetings and large scale events, ensuring smooth execution and participant satisfaction.
  • Adaptive leadership: Facilitate conversations, guide collaborative work, and demonstrate flexibility in changing or challenging circumstances.
  • Attention to detail: Produce accurate written work, manage logistical processes, and maintain organized records supporting training and grant compliance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience)

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating training, professional development, or capacity building programs in public, nonprofit, or educational settings.
  • Experience developing or facilitating workshops or learning events that apply adult learning principles.
  • Proficiency with virtual meeting and learning tools, event planning systems, and standard office software.
  • Experience building relationships with diverse communities or organizations in support of shared public service goals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting information to varied audiences.
