Job summary

Montgomery County Planning Department is offering a Training and Development Internship to support learning, development, and employee engagement initiatives. The role involves assisting with the LMS, training calendars, and event logistics, while helping with communications and data tracking.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in college at undergraduate or graduate level with GPA at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Intern I: pursuing Associate's or Bachelor's in HR/HRD/Industrial Psychology/ Psychology or related field.
  • Intern II: Bachelor's degree and enrolled in Master's in related field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and maintaining the fiscal year training calendar.
  • Assist with LMS administration, create training events, and maintain records.
  • Coordinate pre- and post-training logistics with staff, vendors, and trainees.
  • Develop and update training communications, including flyers, and coordinate with facilitators and vendors.
  • Support cost-effective training opportunities through partnerships with units, departments, and external vendors.
  • Research best practices to boost training participation and learner accountability.
  • Track and analyze training data, attendance, and surveys to identify trends.
  • Assist with mentoring and ERG program development and rollout in partnership with HR.
  • Support Emerging Leaders program administration.
  • Monitor heritage month budgets and provide resource support to chairs.

Job description

Montgomery County Planning Department Human Resources Team is seeking a highly motivated undergraduate or graduate Training and Development Intern with an interest in pursuing a career in one or more of the following fields:

  • Human Resources Management
  • Human Resources Development
  • Industrial Psychology
  • Psychology

This internship provides hands‑on experience in learning and development, employee engagement, leadership development, training administration, and organizational development. The selected intern will work directly with the Human Resources team on high‑impact projects that support employee growth, engagement, and workplace culture.

Montgomery Planning is part of The Maryland‑National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M‑NCPPC). For nearly 100 years, M‑NCPPC has had a national reputation for excellence in planning and today serves a culturally diverse population of over one million people on the border of Washington, D.C. in Montgomery County. Examples of Important Duties
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the fiscal year training calendar.
  • Supporting the administration of the Learning Management System (LMS), including creating training events, maintaining records, and assisting users.
  • Coordinating pre‑ and post‑training logistics with internal staff, vendors, and training participants to ensure successful training delivery.
  • Develop and update training‑related communications, including flyers. Research and coordinate with facilitators and vendors for training events.
  • Assisting with the coordination of cost‑effective training opportunities through partnerships with other units, divisions, departments, government agencies, and external vendors.
  • Researching and recommending best practices to improve training participation, attendance, and learner accountability.
  • Tracking and analyzing training data, including attendance records, evaluation surveys, participant feedback, to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of the Department’s Mentoring and Employee Resource Group (ERG) programs. This includes creating a user guide for the mentoring software and supporting the rollout of ERG guidelines in partnership with the Department of Human Resources.
  • Assisting the HR Manager with the administration of the Emerging Leaders program.
  • Monitoring heritage month program budgets and providing administrative support. Assisting with developing best practices and resources for heritage month chairs and co‑chairs.
  • Creating, updating, and managing content for the Department's training and development webpage.
  • Providing administrative support to the Management Services Division.
Minimum Qualifications

Students must currently be enrolled at a college or university at the undergraduate or graduate level and must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Intern I

Currently enrolled in college pursuing either an Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in human resource management, human resources development, industrial psychology, psychology, or a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned.

Intern II

Student who has received a Bachelor's Degree and accepted or enrolled in a Master's Degree Program pursuing a degree in human resource management, human resources development, industrial psychology, psychology, or a field of study related to the discipline of the area to which assigned.

In addition to the minimum qualifications listed above, the selected intern should be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, as well as Canva. Preferred qualifications include experience creating presentations, marketing materials, webpages, or other communication resources, and experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously. Strong written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, customer service skills, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team are essential.

Internship Dates & Additional Information
  • The projected pay for this position is from $20.50 per hour to $23.50 per hour depending on level and qualifications.
  • The intern is expected to work up to 20 hours per week during the school year.
