Job summary

The City of Kalamazoo is seeking an entry-level Public Services Operator/Maintainer Apprentice to learn wastewater treatment plant operation and maintenance under supervision. The program prepares you to pursue the MDEQ Wastewater Class D License and related exams.

You will gain hands-on experience in primary, secondary, tertiary treatments, solids handling, and routine maintenance, with in-house tests and a path to certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Completion of chemistry, math, biology, and related sciences coursework is preferred.
• Related college coursework or degree and/or an associate degree in mechanical technology is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assists in routine operational, preventive maintenance, and demand maintenance duties.
• Cleans and maintains wastewater plant equipment to facilitate flow and treatment.
• Inspects Treatment Plant computerized components and related equipment as assigned by supervisor.
• Identifies operational or maintenance problems.
• Assists in routine repairs to pumps, mixers, motors, and equipment.
• Performs routine janitorial and grounds maintenance; keeps records as assigned.
