Job summary

National Steel and Shipbuilding Com in Norfolk, VA, is hiring Five Trades Trainee Sheet Metal Mechanics. The program lasts 20 weeks with class time and hands-on training from 0600 to 1445. The role requires basic math, ability to obtain Navy IDs, and commitment to safety and quality on shipyards and bases.

Successful trainees will progress toward skilled sheet metal trades. Trade school is preferred and a high school diploma or equivalent is required to qualify for the program.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; trade school education preferred.
• Must be able to access Navy installations and NAVSEA badges.

Responsibilities

• Complete designated training programs and obtain required certifications.
• Organize, arrange, and maintain order in stockrooms and other material areas.
• Ensure you are trained or qualified for assigned work.
• Perform work safely and maintain quality control at all times.
• Demonstrate good housekeeping to keep the site clean and hazard-free.
• Follow established policies and timekeeping procedures.
• Be aware of emergency and evacuation procedures and muster locations.
• Wear appropriate PPE for assigned tasks.
• Navigate a ship and understand compartment designations, where applicable.
• Have basic knowledge of math and follow directions from a lead mechanic.
• Other duties as assigned.
