Job summary

Oregon Metro is seeking a Train Engineer & Maintenance VHE to operate and maintain gas, diesel, and steam locomotives and related railroad infrastructure. You will perform repairs, fabricate parts, and support guest safety and service for the Zoo Railroad at the Oregon Zoo.

The role requires multi-skilled trades experience, a valid driver's license, and a commitment to safety and teamwork across departments and contractors. Hybrid and variable-hour arrangements may apply where needed.

Qualifications

• Trade certification or equivalent.
• 5 years progressively responsible multi-skill experience such as required for mechanic, machinist, electrical, welding, and heavy equipment operator responsibilities comparable to the Zoo Railroad.
• Any combination of education, professional, volunteer and lived experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.
• Valid Driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Operate gas, diesel and steam powered locomotives and other heavy equipment.
• Perform and coordinate repairs and major overhauls on steam or diesel locomotives or other equipment, systems, or facilities.
• Operate complex machines and electrical testing tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses and evaluate/modify parts as needed.
• Provide support to station attendants and guest services including ticketing and safety checks.
• Communicate with passengers and guests about sites, history, and events; assist with emergencies and lost guests.
• Conduct inspections of railroad and equipment; ensure safe operation and readiness.
• Build, repair tracks, control systems, buildings, sheds and other structures; maintain tools.
• Fabricate metal parts by cutting and welding for engines and fixtures.
• Operate power tools and equipment.
• Compile data for reports and create railroad training documentation.
