Job summary

Metro’s Oregon Zoo Railroad is hiring a Train Engineer & Maintenance VHE to operate locomotives and oversee complex mechanical and electrical systems. You will work across multiple trades to repair, maintain, and fabricate components, while supporting guest services and safety protocols for a memorable guest experience.

The role involves inspecting brakes, cars, and tracks; performing overhauls; and fabricating metal parts.

Qualifications

  • Trade certification or equivalent.
  • 5 years progressively responsible multi-skill experience such as mechanic, machinist, electrical, welding, and heavy equipment operator responsibilities.
  • Experience with diesel or steam locomotives and related systems is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Operate gas, diesel and steam locomotives and heavy equipment.
  • Perform repairs and major overhauls on locomotives, arrange contractor services as needed.
  • Operate machining tools and fabricate parts such as wheels, axles, bearing boxes; evaluate and modify components.
  • Support station attendants and guest services, including ticketing, loading/unloading, and safety checks.
  • Inspect brake systems, passenger cars, and track infrastructure to ensure safe operations.
  • Build, maintain, and repair tracks, control systems, buildings, and fixtures; weld metal parts as needed.
