Job summary

The Ontario Police Department seeks a Police Sergeant for a promotional supervisory role overseeing Officers, Corporals, Detectives and civilian staff under the supervision of a Police Lieutenant.

Candidates must have experience with the Ontario Police Department, hold an Intermediate POST Certificate, a California Class C driver’s license, and desirable college coursework in Criminal Justice or related fields. The selection includes written and oral components and a 12-month probation period.

Qualifications

  • Experience with the Ontario Police Department, including successful completion of probation as a Detective or a minimum of four (4) years experience as a Ontario Police Department Corporal.
  • Possession of, or eligibility to possess, an Intermediate POST Certificate.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Desirable: Completion of two years of college with major course work in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Police Science, Public Administration, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects equipment and appearance of subordinate officers.
  • Briefs officers on special law enforcement problems in the community.
  • Evaluates the performance of subordinate personnel.
  • Counsels subordinates when performance improvement is required.
  • Provides technical assistance to officers in the field when responding to difficult or unusual cases.
  • Provides training in technical areas of law enforcement.
  • Testifies credibly in court.
  • Reviews reports submitted by officers.
  • Prepares plans and special reports assigned by higher authority.
  • Serves as watch commander in the absence of the Lieutenant.
  • When assigned as training sergeant, schedules required training for developing recommended policy and procedure statements.
  • Maintains department policy/procedure manuals.

The Position

The Police Sergeant position is a promotional position for current sworn employees at Ontario Police Department. This position performs supervisory or specialized police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances and the provision of non-criminal services. Under general supervision of a Police Lieutenant, the position supervises Police Officers, Corporals, Detectives and civilian personnel in the performance of their duties, ensuring adherence to department requirements. In certain instances, this position is assigned specialized staff duties.

Qualification Guidelines

Experience: Experience with the Ontario Police Department, including successful completion of probation as a Detective or a minimum of four (4) years experience as a Ontario Police Department Corporal. As stated in the OPOA MOU, no employees in the Police Corporal classification may be promoted to Sergeant until there are two (2) or less employees in the Detective classification remaining on the eligibility list. Based upon these restrictions, employees that qualify for this recruitment due to their experience as a Ontario Police Department Corporal will be subject to these promotional limitations for the life of the eligibility list.

Certification: Possession of, or eligibility to possess, an Intermediate POST Certificate.

License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license.

Desirable: Completion of two years of college with major course work in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Police Science, Public Administration, or a related field.

Eligibility: This is a promotional recruitment open only to current regular full-time employees of the City of Ontario.
Supplemental Information

All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the assessment exercises. The assessment exercises will include a written test (50% of the overall score) and an oral interview (50% of overall score). The written test scores will be combined with the interview scores to determine the overall score.

The assessment exercises are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 9, 2009. Note taking during the test is not permitted. Candidates will be asked to sign a confidentiality document that orders them not to disclose the oral interview questions.

All appointments are subject to 12-month probationary period.

The listed salary range is related to Plan 1.
