Job summary

Oklahoma State University in Stillwater is looking for an experienced Police Patrol Sergeant to lead the patrol division and oversee daily operations. You will mentor officers, coordinate coverage, and make critical decisions in high-pressure situations to keep our campus community safe.

The role requires proven supervisory experience, strong communication, and a deep knowledge of patrol procedures. Compliance with CLEET standards, a valid OK driver’s license, and successful background checks

Qualifications

• Associate's degree required by start date.
• Three (3) years police experience with OSUPD or five (5) years certified law enforcement experience with 1 year as supervisor.
• State of Oklahoma CLEET certification plus officer/senior officer requirements.
• Valid Oklahoma driver’s license and the ability to pass background, polygraph, and drug tests.
• Ability to meet physical and medical requirements for police work.

As a Police Patrol Sergeant, you will be the operational heartbeat of our patrol division. You’ll lead from the front—coordinating patrol activities, mentoring officers, and making critical decisions in high-pressure situations. Required Qualifications

• Associate's (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)

• Three (3) years of police experience with OSUPD or five (5) years certified law enforcement experience with 1 year as a supervisor.

Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

• State of Oklahoma CLEET (Council of Law Enforcement, Education & Training) Basic Certification, plus Police Officer and Sr. Police Officer minimums as listed below.
• 1. Legally met all state and federal employment requirements
• 2. Valid Oklahoma driver’s license
• 3. Ability to pass a battery of mental and physical tests
• 4. Complete background investigation packet from the OSU Police Department
• 5. Successfully pass extensive background investigation
• 6. Successfully pass polygraph examination
• 7. Physical exam
• 9. Drug scan
• 10. Oklahoma Police Certification (CLEET)
• 11. 24-hour emergency vehicle operation training
• 12. Eight hours of CPR training
• B. Successfully pass six (6) month probationary period
• C. Mandated participation in Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System (OLERS)
• D. Received two most recent evaluations of 3.00 or higher
• II. Certification in at least three (3) of the following areas: Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), radar, intoxilyzer, or bike patrol
• III. 120 hours of CLEET continuing education units or 100 hours and CLEET Intermediate certification

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

• A Sergeant must have full sensory perception to properly handle those activities normally expected of a law enforcement officer. Minor deficiencies in sensory perception (sight, hearing), which can be corrected to functional levels, may be acceptable.
• It is required that the Sergeant possess the verbal skills to effectively communicate with others and have the ability to effectively interview those persons to gain pertinent information. Officers must be able to communicate quickly and clearly over a police radio.
• It is required that Sergeants develop the mental ability to deal with stressful situations yet remain calm and make rational decisions involving the lives and safety of others.
• It is required that Sergeants possess the physical capabilities (including the use of both arms and legs) and psychomotor skills to be able to perform the following tasks:
  • a. Walk and run up or down multiple flights of stairs or stadium steps.
  • b. Lift or pull an injured person to safety (up to 200 lbs.).
  • c. Operate a police vehicle in routine and emergency situations.
  • d. Chase a fleeing suspect a moderate distance, up to 1/2 mile.
  • e. Apprehend a suspect and maintain custody.
  • f. Handcuff an arrested person who may resist.
  • g. Become proficient (and fire a qualifying score) with the department-issued firearm on both day and nighttime courses.
  • h. Stand and/or walk continuously for a regular eight-hour shift.
  • i. To be proficient in CLEET trained defensive tactics.
  • j. Manually direct traffic.
• A Sergeant will be expected to perform day-to-day duties through the operation of the following types of equipment:
