This job opening is for one Traffic System Specialist I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay.

Essential Duties for a Traffic Systems Technician I or II:
- Assists in inspecting construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install and maintain traffic-related systems/equipment in accordance with plans and specifications and contract requirements.
- Assists in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting and/or repair of electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection, and/or illumination systems.
- Assists in installing, troubleshooting and maintaining hardware and software pertaining to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
- Assists in maintaining stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
- Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
- Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
- Learns to identify, troubleshoot, problem solve and identify possible new site characteristics.
- Learns to install, maintain and replace TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cable and communication modems; monitors communication devices/systems.
- Moves/assists in the placement of barricades, cones and other traffic control devices.
- Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic data collection equipment.
Additional Duties for a Traffic Systems Technician II:
- Assists in designing and reviewing traffic signal, traffic data collection and illumination design projects.
- Assists in measuring intersections and evaluating traffic patterns and timing sequences; computes mathematical factors for adjusting timing of traffic signals and/or systems.
- Assists in programming traffic data collection systems to create, modify station description records, station direction of travel, lane of travel, and/or algorithms for vehicle classification.
- Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
- Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements.
- Installs, maintains and replaces TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cables; monitors communication devices/systems; as required moves related equipment/items.
- Installs, troubleshoots and maintains hardware and software related to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
- Maintains stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, equipment, products and materials are available for scheduled projects.
- Prepares written reports that provide feedback on systems including ease of installation and setup, status of inventory needs, any problems encountered or other issues.
- Assists in gathering background information for traffic and signal tort claims.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience for a Traffic System Tech I: None
Experience for a Traffic System Tech II: 1 year in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for Traffic Systems Tech I or II:
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
