Job summary

Jobtailor in Birmingham, AL is seeking a seasoned Traffic Engineer to coordinate traffic studies, oversee road construction reviews, and analyze accident data to improve efficiency and safety across city streets. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil, Electrical, or Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Driver's license.
  • Knowledge of traffic studies, control systems, roadway safety, lighting, and regulations.
  • Ability to review traffic-study data with software.
  • Budget preparation and administration.
  • Effective communication with agencies, contractors, and the public.
  • Ability to operate central traffic computer operations and signal systems.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., as needed.
  • Willingness to conduct field visits in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee traffic studies, road construction reviews, and accident analyses.
  • Develop plans and systems to improve traffic flow, pedestrian and roadway safety, and street lighting.
  • Oversee the design of traffic control systems using civil engineering practices, applicable standards and specifications, and engineering codes and regulations.
  • Review traffic data and subordinate staff recommendations to determine measures for improving traffic operations.
  • Review and analyze traffic-study data using computer software to evaluate results and identify potential interventions.
  • Prepare, monitor, and administer departmental or organizational budgets.
  • Communicate with coworkers, supervisors, governmental agencies, private contractors, and the public to identify and solve traffic-flow problems.
  • Operate and maintain central traffic computer operations and other signal systems.
  • Plan and oversee studies involving signs, pavement markings, street lighting, signal warrants, school zones, railroad crossings, pedestrian crossings, lane widening, road construction, and accident analysis.
  • Review and process permit requests to document and minimize traffic disruptions.
  • Supervise staff by assigning work, directing duties, monitoring progress, and providing feedback or training.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree; alternatively, currently enrolled and actively working toward graduation within 6 months of the job announcement opening date
  • Driver's license
  • Knowledge of traffic studies, traffic control systems, roadway safety, street lighting, traffic operations, and engineering standards and regulations
  • Ability to use computer software to review and analyze traffic-study data
  • Ability to prepare and administer departmental or organizational budgets
  • Ability to communicate with coworkers, supervisors, governmental agencies or departments, private contractors, and members of the public
  • Ability to operate and maintain central traffic computer operations and signal systems
  • Ability to supervise and train staff
  • Ability to perform occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in office settings and conduct regular field visits, including exposure to weather and roadway traffic
