Position Overview

The City of Norfolk's Department of Transportation is seeking Traffic Maintenance Technician I for its Traffic Operations Center. These technicians are responsible for field installations of traffic signs and pavement markings, supporting special events by setting up traffic control devices.

Department Responsibilities

The Department ensures safe and convenient mobility for all residents, whether walking, riding, rolling, or driving. The Traffic Operations Center manages the building, painting, maintenance, and operation of all signalized and non-signalized traffic control facilities, shaping the city's mobility and safety priorities. The department maintains over 700 miles of traffic lane lines, 813 crosswalks, 315 traffic signals, 120 school and pedestrian crossing signals, 22 flashers, and over 31,000 streetlights. It also fabricates, installs, and maintains more than 40,000 traffic control signs.

Essential Functions
  1. Administers pavement markings projects by loading materials into thermo kettles and other trucks.
  2. Sweeps work areas, prepares markings, and sets up thermo machines, traffic cones, and barricades following the "Virginia Work Area Protection Manual".
  3. Operates forklifts, thermoplastic hand liners, and eradication machines for pavement marking installation and removal.
  4. Installs, repairs, and maintains signs by drilling, digging, riveting, hammering, grinding, banding, bolting, cementing, and driving posts or poles, including pole removal.
  5. Inspects and maintains equipment and vehicles.
  6. Investigates requirements for signs, crosswalks, lane lines, arrows, or other markings, and manages safety devices for special events, providing information to motorists and pedestrians.
Qualifications

Must be able to read and understand written instructions, comprehend simple processes, and operate machines routinely. Knowledge level is equivalent to less than high school or an equivalent diploma.

Preferred Experience: One year of experience in traffic, construction, plumbing, or HVAC work.

Additional Skills and Requirements
  • Ability to read and understand instructions, maps, work orders, and blueprints.
  • Perform basic math calculations.
  • Create and complete work orders.
  • Possess a valid Driver's License; CDL preferred.
Work Schedule and Conditions

Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This position is classified as essential and requires 24-hour shifts during emergencies or inclement weather.
