This posting will be used to fill a full-time, permanent, safety sensitive, Traffic Maintenance Technician position in the Bureau of Highways Traffic Maintenance Division in the Department of Public Works.
This is technical work in installation, maintenance and repair of electro-mechanical traffic counting devices and pavement markings of all types.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves responsibility to supervise and participate in the activities of lower level general labor employees engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of all traffic counter and pavement marking related equipment and materials.
Work is performed with some independence; however, the more unusual and/or difficult tasks are outlined by a supervisor. Work is inspected by a supervisor while in progress and upon completion.(Note: The duties and responsibilities enumerated in this class specification are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications and salary level for all positions in this class. They are not intended to include all of the essential job functions of all positions in the class).
Supervise and participate in the work of one or more small sized crews in the maintenance, repair, installation, and modifications of traffic counting devices.
Layout unmarked roads; install lane lines, edge lines, centerlines, channelization lines, paint islands, and other pavement markings. Operate and maintain all equipment associated with the job; perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on same.
Assist in ordering materials and maintaining a parts and supplies inventory. Study manuals and literature to remain abreast of new equipment and procedures. Assist in preparing and maintaining necessary records and reports.
Train assigned personnel in the use, maintenance, and safety procedure of all equipment utilized in the area of assignment. Practice and promote safety precautions of the work. Perform related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the practices, materials, tools, equipment, and processes of the area of assignment. Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
Ability to supervise the work of subordinate unskilled and semi-skilled employees performing various maintenance duties, and repairs to obtain effective results. Ability to understand and follow instructions, as well as, blueprints, diagrams, and sketches. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively.Sufficient education to understand and follow oral and written instructions and blueprints, diagrams, and sketches; two (2) years of experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices; experience in utilizing appropriate traffic-control measures to protect work sites in or along roadways; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license; and, as determined by area of assignment, a valid commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license.
Note: This position is Safety Sensitive and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.
