HDR, Inc. is seeking a Traffic Engineering/Planning Intern in Omaha, NE to support transportation planning, analysis and design under supervision.

You will gain hands-on experience on real projects, learn GIS data handling, and collaborate with planners, engineers, and communications specialists across HDR’s Transportation Business Group. The internship emphasizes applying standard processes, collecting data, and drafting plans while mentoring new graduates and contributing to impactful mobility

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills.

Responsibilities

  • Apply standard planning and engineering processes in transportation planning, analysis and design.
  • Assist with identifying transportation needs and conducting traffic operations and safety assessments.
  • Develop mitigation strategies and support traffic design.
  • Collaborate with multimodal teams of planners, engineers and specialists.
  • Collect and evaluate project data, including GIS analysis and Census data.
  • Write data-backed plans and studies and present to project teams and clients.
  • Research strategies to address current and future transportation deficiencies.
  • Connect with recent graduates through mentoring programs.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

In the role of a Traffic Engineering/Planning Intern, we'll count on you to:

  • Gain real-world experience on exciting projects by applying standard planning and engineering processes and procedures in the areas of transportation planning, analysis and design
  • Work under the guidance and direct supervision of a more senior-level Engineers and Planners to assist with identifying existing and future transportation needs, conducting traffic operational and safety assessments, developing mitigation strategies and supporting traffic design.
  • Collaborate with our multimodal teams of planners, engineers, technical specialists, and communications specialists.
  • Collect and evaluate project data, including GIS analysis, Census data, analysis of large datasets, and research.
  • Evaluate operational, connectivity, and safety needs across all modes of travel.
  • Help write data-backed and compelling plans and studies, presenting your work to project team members and clients.
  • Research and suggest strategies to address existing and future transportation system deficiencies.
  • Connect with recent college graduates and our company leaders through mentoring and young professionals' programs
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer 2+ years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
  • Knowledge of GIS and/or CADD software
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry
  • Preference given to local candidates
