Job description

Traffic Engineering Technician

The Traffic Engineering Technician position is located within the Cobb County Department of Transportation's Traffic Engineering Division. This role supports the management of the County’s traffic calming program by overseeing its daily operations. Responsibilities include maintaining traffic volume data collection efforts and accident databases, with regular collaboration with residents and internal departments. The role involves both field work and office/computer tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Investigate and report on traffic complaints and requests for additional traffic control devices.
  2. Monitor real-time traffic from the TCC and communicate traffic conditions.
  3. Conduct field investigations for traffic control signals and devices, including school zones and subdivisions.
  4. Gather and analyze data for studies, such as speed hump studies and traffic counts.
  5. Verify and manage traffic databases, including uploading and downloading data.
  6. Assist County crews with troubleshooting intersection issues.
  7. Enter and review traffic accident data, prepare reports, and forward reports involving County property damage.
  8. Prepare work orders, sketches, and details for traffic conditions and improvements.
  9. Assist field crews via radio communication, verifying issues with data comparison.
  10. Handle citizen complaints regarding street lights and other traffic concerns, ensuring resolution.
  11. Draft petitions and documents for traffic control devices requests, complying with county ordinances.
  12. Perform sight distance studies, speed and volume data collection, turning counts, and prepare detour signing plans.
  13. Prepare fact sheets for road closings and house moves.
  14. Maintain databases related to lighting districts and traffic operations.
  15. Maintain punctuality and attendance.
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED, plus two years of experience in traffic engineering principles. Valid Driver's License required.

Physical and Sensory Requirements

Moderate physical effort involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects of 12-20 pounds. Ability to perceive colors, sounds, textures, and visual cues. Oral communication skills required.

Environmental Factors

Work is performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
