Job summary

HDR is seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our Madison or Milwaukee, Wisconsin office. You will advance traffic engineering studies, prepare plans and reports, and mentor junior staff while growing relationships with transportation clients across the state.

The role emphasizes leadership, cross-discipline collaboration, and delivering safe, efficient mobility outcomes for communities. This is a full-time on-site position.

Qualifications

• Professional engineer license (PE) required or licensed in the location.
• Hands-on CAD experience with MicroStation and AutoCAD.
• Experience with traffic analysis and modeling tools (HCS, Synchro, VISSIM, Aimsun).
• Experience with WisDOT practices and design standards.
• Ability to mentor junior staff and lead multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong client relationship development and project leadership.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex traffic engineering projects and prepare plans and reports.
• Lead and support studies including operations and safety analyses.
• Collaborate across roadway, planning, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Make design decisions and supervise small staff when needed.
• Develop client relationships and help grow HDR’s Wisconsin practice.
• Mentor early-career staff and contribute to project management.
