Job summary

The City of Billings is seeking a Traffic Analyst to perform skilled traffic analysis using AutoCAD, GIS, and engineering computer systems. The role supports professional staff with data access, project coordination, and traffic management initiatives.

This position involves field data collection, data automation, and contributing to traffic calming and permitting programs while maintaining the city’s transportation data resources.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree and 1+ years in transportation/engineering/public works or related field.
  • Strong interpersonal and computer skills are required.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data.
  • Ability to perform field inspections or site assessments.
  • Experience collaborating with engineering teams, planners, public agencies, and project managers.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to data accuracy and quality control.

Responsibilities

  • Create maps for engineering projects with emphasis on traffic analysis.
  • Extract data from GIS and coordinate data for division use.
  • Coordinate with IT to ensure GIS data relevance and accuracy.
  • Enter and archive data for departmental records.
  • Maintain traffic records database and analysis software integrity.
  • Review traffic control plans, signings, and coordinate street closures.
  • Assist with traffic signal hardware management and GIS integration.
  • Maintain division website for traffic engineering.
  • Conduct field traffic studies including counts and speed studies.
  • Deploy and maintain automated traffic data equipment.
  • Assist with speed limit studies and signal timing calculations.
  • Collect travel time data to evaluate corridor timing plans.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations for staff and public.
