Job summary

Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is seeking a part-time Traffic Control Officer to protect children and parents crossing roadways near schools and to help buses enter and exit school grounds safely. Officers are assigned to designated school crossings within the Cumberland County School System based on traffic volume and crossing characteristics.

Job description

This position requires a thorough knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. This position should have a thorough knowledge of the organizational structure of the Sheriff's Office and other related departments of County Government

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office employs 95 non-sworn, part-time personnel assigned to the Traffic Control Unit. The Traffic Control Officer's primary responsibilities are to provide protection for children and parents crossing roadways en route to and from school and to assist bus and other school-related traffic to enter and exit the school grounds in a safe and timely manner. Traffic Control Officers are assigned to designated crossings at schools within the Cumberland County School System, based upon traffic volume, physical terrain, the number and ages of children utilizing the crossing, and the width of the intersection.

Must be a United States Citizen, be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and have a valid North Carolina driver's license. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, which includes, but not limited to, criminal background check, eye and hearing exam, and drug screening.

This position requires open availability from 7:00 am to 8:00 am and from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during active school days (weekends, holidays, and summer off).
